Math Jones:
Ur byth anmod and oferhyrned felafrecne deor feohteth mid hornum mære morstapa thæt is modig wuht
Translation: Ur - the aurochs - is one-minded, has one mood, and is overhorned, a fully fierce deer, it fights with its horns a famous moor-stepper and a moody wight.
A vivid description of the ur-ox. Here mod, as in anmod and modig, is far more than our modern moody/sullen, referring to an older use of temper. Mood is also one's sense of self, one's heart and mind, one's spirit, and the honouring of one's feelings. A time to stand firm, to own one's worth. |

Thorunn Freyrsfriend Ur The aurochs being a majestic beast and although, as a species it must have had both male and female animals, it has a primal strong, powerful and virile male symbolism. This is a rune of natural martial qualities and this links to the god Freyr whose play was battle. General Meanings: Raw energy and a powerful force. An encouragement to a more aggressive attitude or, in the wrong circumstances, a warning that not enough thought is being going into the force applied. |
| Ferret Loki's Friend
Ur applied to Loki: Here we are told of magnificent powerful beasts. Among his children Loki has some of the strongest and most impressive animals of the myths, Sleipnir the fastest of all horses, Fenris the wolf who will bring down Odin and Jormungand, the serpent that surrounds Midgard. They all have attributes to admire, aspire to, and respect. |
| Savrin Loki's
Friend
A magnificent beast. To me this is all things big and beautiful and powerful. Consequently I use it to refer to cars, bikes and buildings as well as strength and animals. |
Olwen Thor's Friend
Ur applied to Thor: Ur represents the invunerable strength of Midgard's defender and is the rune of his hammer Mjolnir. Ur is the bull skybellower that Thor used as bait when he fished for the World Serpent. Ur is the eagle symbolising Thor's shamanic might which can strike like lightning. Strength without wisdom is no matter for pride.Art by Jim Kirkwood |
